4 month old infant milestones

Developmental milestones for 4 month old infants

Developmental milestonesMay 18, 2025Dahlia Rimmon, MS, RDN2 min read

3 things you’re probably seeing this month

  1. Is that a laugh? 😆 Yes! Those giggles are a sign of social and emotional growth. Play peek-a-boo or make silly noises to keep the laughter going.
  2. See your baby rolling ☀️Rolling from tummy to back (or back to tummy) might be their newest skill, and marks a leap in motor development.
  3. Everything goes in the mouth 😬 Your baby is exploring the world through their senses, especially taste. Oral exploration is normal and helps them learn about objects around them.

What’s coming up in month 5?

  1. More active play 🧸 Your baby will start reaching for and grabbing toys with greater accuracy. Provide safe objects to explore.
  2. Strengthening core muscles 💪 Expect them to push up more during tummy time, a precursor to sitting up on their own.
  3. Increased Babbling 💬 You’ll hear more consonant sounds like “ba” or “da” as they experiment with their voice.

Proactive Tip: Encourage tummy time and offer toys that make noise to keep your baby engaged while strengthening their muscles.

Vaccines & well-child visits

Staying on top of well-child visits and vaccines is key. Here’s what is coming up:

The 4-month well-child visit:

This checkup includes:

  • Tracking your baby’s growth (weight, length, and head circumference)
  • Monitoring developmental progress
  • Discussing sleep, feeding, and behavior

Vaccines at this visit:

Your baby will receive the second dose of these vaccines:

  • DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis)
  • Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b)
  • IPV (Polio)
  • PCV13 (Pneumococcal)
  • Rotavirus

Tip: After vaccines, mild fussiness or a slight fever is common. Have infant acetaminophen ready, and text a Summer Health pediatrician with any questions.
